More photos of our Lake Carriage House in Upstate New York.
We’ve gotten a lot of questions about the stonework, which is quite unique. The pattern and type of stone are particular to the area. The stones themselves were formed by the same glacial activity that created the stunning lakes in this region. We worked closely with the mason to achieve a texture that recalls the vernacular precedents of nineteenth century buildings we found nearby. We love work with clients who appreciate these materials, and to work with trades who can turn these unique components into the dwellings we design.

More from our lovely carriage house on Canandaigua Lake. We chose Antique heart pine floors from @h.p.co to give this space warmth. Mahogany countertops add to the richness of the material palette. Outside, we have hand-forged shutter hardware from Michael Coldren in Maryland, and reclaimed Belgian farm pavers that border the antique cobbles, also sourced in Belgium. It’s such a pleasure to work with clients who appreciate these materials, and to work with trades who can turn these unique components into the dwellings we design.

Some previews of this lovely house, for a lovely couple, on a lovely site called Beautiful Run! We’re so pleased at how this came together, and the owners are happy to call it home. Here are three little moments that stand out: the stunning wallpaper in the entry powder room, the spacious loft library area, and the cozy wet bar that invites an afternoon drink. The owners served us a gorgeous luncheon from the new kitchen (more pictures soon,) and we celebrated the completed project on the terrace that looks out to the mountains. Adding a new kitchen and living space to this Barboursville house has completely transformed it, while maintaining a scale that suits the site and the neighboring houses. We worked with some of our favorite builders and trades on this one, which was scheduled for construction right about when Covid hit. Everyone involved did a beautiful job, including the clients, who were delightful! We wish them many many years of happy gatherings in this new space.

Here are some details from our stone Carriage House on Lake Canandaigua. The field stone is local, laid in a traditional pattern that is found in 19th century buildings in this area. We sourced reclaimed antique cobbles from Belgium for the drive court, and made an apron of antique Belgian farm pavers. From the slate roof to the hand forged hardware, we had so much fun working out these traditional details in authentic materials. It feels good to design something that will be handed down for many generations to come.

Some new details from our Carriage House on Lake C

Some new details from our Carriage House on Lake Canandaigua. We had these shutters carved with a fish detail to recall the theme of the fishing lodge we completed a few years back. The shutter hardware was hand forged by Michael Coldren in Maryland. Those sills and lintels are bluestone, and the field stone is local, laid in a traditional pattern that is found in older buildings in this area. This little jewel box is the guest house for its predecessor next door. Once the snow melts, we’ll be able to show you the reclaimed Belgian cobble drive court which was recently completed! 🐬🗝❄️

It’s hard to imagine a site prettier than this one for a new house in Albemarle County. We paid extra attention to the trees on this site, and made sure to make the best of this abundance of views. Working with the landscape features means the house will look like it belongs there. It already feels right at home next to these magnificent trees.
