We worked with this client on the full restoration of an adjacent property several years ago. When the opportunity came up to design a carriage house to serve the main house, we were thrilled to work on this site and with this owner again.
The owner wanted us to provide authentic details for this small building, which is our favorite kind of directive! The stone exterior is based on local examples of vernacular masonry. We worked closely with the mason to achieve the right texture for this scale of building, using images we gathered from historic structures in Upstate New York. We found craftsmen who specialize in historic hardware to hand forge the shutter and carriage door hinges. We used antique Belgian cobbles in the entry court, and a border of reclaimed farm pavers that also came from Belgium. The interior flooring is reclaimed heart pine from a local source.
